The Castro de Coaña, also known as the Castro de Mohías, is a fortified settlement that dates back to the Iron Age, specifically between the 5th century BC and the 1st century AD. It is believed that this ancient village was inhabited by the Astures, a Celtic people who settled in the mountainous region of Asturias. The castro was strategically built on top of a hill overlooking the mouth of the Navia River, offering breathtaking panoramic views.
These castros were pre-Roman communities that built circular or rectangular houses atop hills, protected by walls and ditches.
Features and Structure:
The Castro de Coaña extends over a hill and occupies an approximate area of 50,000 square meters. It preserves remnants of defensive walls, dwellings, warehouses, and communal spaces. Additionally, the remains of a central structure, possibly a ceremonial center, can be observed, highlighting the social and religious significance of this settlement.
The main architectural feature of the castro is its walls, constructed with stone and earth, surrounding the perimeter of the settlement.
